Case Study
Strengthening Resilience to Online Radicalisation in Schools Across North West England
NSTN worked with local government and secondary schools across North West England to help young people and staff recognise and challenge extreme right-wing and Islamist messaging online.
Case Type
Training
Organisation
Local Government and Secondary Schools
Date
January to March 2026
Region
North West England

Challenge
The local region faced a risk profile where Extreme Right-Wing (ERW) activity was prevalent and Islamist narratives exploited international grievances to target vulnerable individuals. Local government identified education settings as a primary source of Prevent referrals, highlighting an urgent need to build critical thinking and digital resilience against online grooming, propaganda and misinformation.
What NSTN did
Used a hybrid model of 30 face-to-face workshops for students and four online sessions for multi-agency professionals.
Used interactive, scenario-based learning to address recruitment tactics, early indicators of concern and the practical safeguarding actions necessary to challenge extremist messaging.
Facilitated structured discussions focused on antisemitism, Islamophobia and how extremist groups use hate-based narratives to create community division.
Outcome
Professionals reported a significant increase in their ability to recognise early risk indicators, while school staff noted that students were immediately engaged in reflective discussions and demonstrated a clear grasp of new safeguarding pathways.
