Challenge
The local government identified a significant risk regarding Islamist extremist-inspired harm and the exploitation of international grievance narratives to recruit vulnerable individuals. Furthermore, there was notable mistrust and several misconceptions surrounding the Prevent framework within local groups, which hindered community engagement and the effectiveness of local safeguarding and reporting routes.

What NSTN did
Delivered a series of ten online workshops tailored for professionals and five face-to-face sessions within community settings.
Conducted deep-dive sessions on recruitment tactics, including those in online gaming spaces, and explored how extremist groups exploit international events and misinformation to influence attitudes.
Created safe, non-judgemental environments for respectful discussion to directly address stigma and build trust between practitioners and community members.
Outcome
The initiative supported approximately 275 professionals and community members, including parents and carers. Evaluation data showed that all surveyed participants reported an improved understanding of radicalisation pathways and increased confidence in navigating referral routes. Ultimately, the project strengthened local partnership working and improved community confidence in seeking early support.
